For the year to April 2011, the Mayor of the London Borough of Hounslow, Colin Ellar, has chosen ASIA as one of his two mayoral charities. A focus of fundraising in Hounslow will be an excellent Water and Sanitation Project in Nepal, which will establish access to safe drinking water for 8,000 people. The Water and Sanitation ProjectASIA will work with the Village Development Committee of Debhumi Baluwa, an underprivileged village in Kavre Destrict, to the east of the Kathmandu Valley. Conditions in this village are extremely basic. The water that is available water must be carried from afar, none of it is safe, and toilets, where they exist, are inadequate. The project will construct a water supply system for each cluster of 5-10 households. One well-designed toilet will be built for each household, supplying valuable compost safely. Small local biogas plants will be built to dispose of inorganic waste that is currently a source of contamination, and these will also generate energy. During all the phases of the project, a series of awareness campaigns will increase basic knowledge of health, hygiene and environmental protection. There will also be training in the management and maintenance of the facilities. Neighbouring villages have already been selected for expansion of the project after this first phase.
