THE SHANG SHUNG INSTITUTE UK The London School of Tibetan Studies Following the directive of Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, this new branch of the International Shang Shung Institute aims to focus on the study of Tibetan culture within a traditional academic context. Based on the study programme of a traditional Tibetan College, this exciting new Institute will offer students the opportunity to train in the ‘Five Great Fields of Knowledge’ or ‘Five Sciences’. For further information please visit our website.
The study programme of the London School of Tibetan Studies will be divided into Five Faculties, which correspond to the Five Sciences. Knowledge of Tibetan culture is traditionally classified into Five Great Fields of Knowledge. These are: Art, Medicine, Language & Grammar, Logic and Inner Meaning.
The London School of Tibetan Studies aims to offer study courses in all five Faculties of Knowledge, following the traditional programme of a traditional Tibetan ‘College’: this is something unique in the West. The Institute will also offer links to other academic bodies such as the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London and other branches of the International Shang Shung Institute.
Individual courses will include the provision of structured study programmes and training across a range of levels, both academic and non-academic, including some vocationally based courses. It will also encourage independent critical research. Introductory courses will help prepare prospective students to carry out further study and research into all five Faculties. We will also provide courses that will appeal to a wider general public. Our vision, however, is not only to benefit each student individually but also to make a contribution to society.
